machine embroidery on soluble (tute available)

30 Jan

Nell had sent me a sample of a new soluble to try out and WOW, am i impressed with the stuff!! It didn’t tear, was easy to draw on without leaving marks on the threadwork, and dissolved right away with no sticky residue, and not having to rinse and rinse and rinse. Awesome stuff. (see Nell’s phenomenal work here –scroll down past the shop, and another artist i admire also who uses this product, Sharon, here. I’ve posted these links before but oh my are they worth looking at again!) Mine looks rather plain in comparison, but i have plans to try more intricate work in the future :)

I’m using it for the finishing touches on La Ugly ecoprint, and should be finished that by the end of the weekend coming.

I posted a tute on the StitchinFingers Ning site, in the Machine Stitch Embroidery group. I don’t know if you have to be a member to view it, but if you do, signup is free.

For Carol Arlee’s sample is Pellon wash n gone. Aquamagic and vilene wash away are different brands much the same product…I think babylock do a similar as will many brands. look wise its similar to a fine non woven sew in interfacing.
Glad to you know you like it Arlee, can’t wait to see what you turn it into its looking amazing.

Looking good arlee … I’m glad for this new water-soluble …and thanks for the ‘link’ … hope I get some visitors !
Liked your tutorial as well and have a hint for you. Wrap the inner ring of your embroidery hoop with bias tape (over-lapping) tightly and secure ends with a few stitches. This will help ‘grip’ the fabric in the hoop and you’ll spend less time tightening as you work.
Also, Pfaff sells a wonderful machine-embroidery hoop that is thicker but lower in height and has a super screw that allows you to tighten your hoop with a screw driver. Costly probably, but well worth it … glad I got all mine 30 yrs. ago !

I just taught a one day “Honey there’s something wrong with your sewing machine” machine stitching class on water soluble… materials. We mostly used the old and established water soluble that is a sodium alginate layer = plastic looking stuff. but between us we had a box-full of different types of water soluble surfaces, some more like fabric than plastic films others are like paper and each has its own uses and benefits. One could write a thesis on the stuff!
I love the works though Arlee, more more more
